A few late-summer jobs around the plot this week โ and one of the sunflowers got completely out of hand (in the best way). Here’s the 40-second version:
Taller than me โ and time to save the seeds
The giant sunflower head had started to droop and the seeds were about to drop, so it was time to cut it down and save them. The trick is to get to it just before they fall on their own: cut the head, pop it in a mesh bag, and rub the seeds out over a cloth. Dry them off and you’ve got next year’s flowers โ and plenty spare for the birds.
Did you know? What sunflowers do for you โ and the soil
Sunflower seeds are genuinely good for you โ they’re one of the best natural sources of vitamin E, plus a solid hit of magnesium and healthy fats. But the plant earns its place in the garden in another way too: sunflowers are famous for cleaning the soil. Their deep taproots break up compacted ground, and they’re one of the classic plants used in phytoremediation โ drawing heavy metals and toxins up out of contaminated soil (they were even trialled to help clean up around Chernobyl). Not bad for a cheerful yellow flower.
Wild blackberries at their best
The other seasonal job that doesn’t feel like a job at all: foraging the wild blackberries along the hedgerow while they’re perfectly ripe. A little tart on the shadier side, but the sunny ones are the best bit โ straight off the bush.
How we made the video
As always, this one is real footage narrated in Peter’s real voice โ the audio you hear is live and in the moment, not a scripted or AI voiceover. The edit was assembled with Claude Code; the on-screen captions were rendered with Pillow; the music is from the YouTube Audio Library; the narration was timed against a Whisper transcription; and it was all stitched together with ffmpeg. Part of our ongoing “fuel your curiosity” experiments in AI-assisted filmmaking โ the tools change, the garden is always real.
More from the plot: a whole week’s harvest, plot to plate, the whole farm behind one croissant, and our farm cats explaining plant nutrients.
