Every winter we cover the planters with cardboard — it keeps the weeds down and the soil protected through the cold months. Now it’s high summer and we’re left with this: a weathered, half-rotted pile that needs clearing today. Which raised a question we couldn’t resist digging into: what’s the most carbon-smart thing to do with a pile of old cardboard?
The intuitive answer is “compost it.” It turns out that’s not quite the best one — and the honest story is more interesting.
Store it for later, or use it now?
Our first instinct was to save it for autumn bed-making. But take a look at the state of it: damp, greying, already fragmenting, with weeds growing through it. Cardboard only stores well dry and flat — a soggy pile like this bagged away just becomes a mouldy, collapsing mess by autumn. So the answer is use it now. Better still, you don’t need to wait: summer is a fine time to sheet-mulch (that cardboard-and-compost layer holds soil moisture through the heat and smothers fast-growing weeds), and a part-rotted pile like this is ideal for it — it’s already softening, with soil life in it, so it breaks into the ground faster than fresh cardboard would.
The winner: sheet-mulch it into no-dig beds
The best use for a whole pile of cardboard is sheet mulching (a.k.a. lasagna mulching, or the bottom layer of a no-dig bed). You lay the cardboard flat over a bed or path, wet it thoroughly, and top it with a layer of compost or organic mulch. Then you plant straight into the top.
Why it wins on carbon:
- It’s a no-dig method — and not disturbing the soil protects the carbon already stored in it. Every time you dig, you expose soil carbon to air and it oxidises away. Sheet mulching leaves it be.
- As the cardboard breaks down, it feeds soil life (worms adore it) and a portion of its carbon is stabilised into soil organic matter — slowly building the soil rather than burning off.
- It smothers weeds, holds moisture, and prevents erosion — all without herbicide or plastic.
It also uses the entire pile in one go, needs no special equipment, and — if you’ve been covering planters with it all winter — it’s just the natural next step.
Second: compost it as a “brown”
If you haven’t got beds to mulch, tear the cardboard up and use it as the carbon-rich “brown” in your compost, balancing the nitrogen-rich “greens” (kitchen scraps, grass). It’s genuinely useful and keeps the material out of the bin. But be honest about what it is: composting is mostly carbon cycling — the majority of the carbon returns to the air as CO₂ as it breaks down. It’s climate-positive versus landfill, but it isn’t locking carbon away.
What about “proper” sequestration — biochar?
If you want to genuinely lock carbon away for centuries, the champion is biochar — biomass baked in a low-oxygen burn into a stable, charcoal-like carbon that persists in soil for a very long time. The catch: cardboard is a poor, impractical feedstock for it (the inks, glues and the pyrolysis process make it a hassle). Save biochar for your woody prunings and twigs instead — that’s the right raw material.
The honest carbon reality
Here’s the bit we think matters most, because it’s easy to overclaim: a pile of cardboard is never going to lock away tonnes of carbon forever. The real climate wins are quieter but genuine:
- Avoided landfill methane. Cardboard rotting in an anaerobic landfill releases methane — a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO₂ in the short term. Keeping it in your garden avoids that entirely.
- Building soil organic carbon. A modest but real fraction becomes stable humus in your soil.
- Protecting existing soil carbon by going no-dig.
So the best “carbon sequestration activity” for a pile of cardboard is really the best carbon-smart use — and that’s sheet-mulching it into your beds. It won’t win a carbon-offset award, but it diverts waste, dodges methane, quietly builds your soil, and saves you buying weed fabric or peat-based mulch. That’s a good day’s work for a pile of old boxes.
Quick how-to (and a few honest caveats)
- Prep it: pull off any plastic tape, staples and heavily-glossy printed panels. Plain brown corrugated is ideal; most modern inks are soy-based and fine.
- Overlap the sheets generously (no gaps for weeds), wet it thoroughly, then top with 5–10cm of compost or mulch.
- Don’t let it dry out bone-dry — dry cardboard can repel water and form a crust. Keep it damp until it starts to break down.
- A fair note: there’s more gardener experience than published research behind cardboard mulching, and a few soil scientists debate how it affects gas exchange. In practice, for home beds, kept damp and topped with compost, it’s a long-trusted technique.
